CHAPTER 11

"What is ten thousand dollars in pounds, Maggie?"

She didn't even look up from the pages of Virginia's manuscript. "How should I know? I don't shop in London. Now shut up, I'm reading." She lifted her eyes for a moment, glared at him. "And for God's sake, stuff that thing behind a couch or something."

Saint Just looked at the oversized check and smiled. "Bothers you to no end, doesn't it, that I was right?"

Maggie smiled evilly. "Not at all, Alex, at least not once you get the real check, and endorse it over to me. I'll even be magnanimous, and call us even. Now go away. Virginia expects me to have finished this by the time she gets up here."

"And how is it, Saint Maggie, martyr extraordainaire?" Saint Just asked, putting down the check and coming to the table, to lean over Maggie's shoulder.

"Not bad," she told him, smiling up at him. "Pretty good, actually. It was good before, Virginia always has been good, about the best Regency writer I know, but I think she's getting the hang of the massage bit."

Saint Just put his hands on Maggie's shoulders and began kneading her stiff muscles. "Like this?"

Maggie bit down hard, trying to suppress the reluctant tingle that ran through her at his touch. "No,

damn it, nothing like that. Don't you have something else to do, somebody else to bother?"

"Well, Sterling does want me to listen to his rap, now that Socks gave his final approval last evening.

Do you suppose these windows open? I would just as soon toss myself out onto the flag-way." "Don't let me stop you." Maggie put down her pen. "No, wait, I need a break. I've been at this since six. Sterling's rap might be just what I need. Where is he?"

"Where is who? Whom? Are you talking about me? You could, yes, could, be talking about me."

"Yes, Sterling, we were talking about you," Maggie said, smiling at the man who seemed to be walking

on his tiptoes, full of a strange energy he didn't quite know how to dissipate. "Are you all right?"

Sterling bounced in place. "Fine. Never better. Top, top, top of the world and all of that—sha-ba-sha-ba."

Maggie stuck her tongue out one corner of her mouth, looked up at Saint Just, then said, "Sha~ba-sha-ba?"

Saint Just shrugged. "Earlier, Mary Louise mentioned something about Sterling being wired for something, but I confess I really have no idea. He does look as if someone should be pulling a plug and suggesting he have himself a lie down."

Sterling stood in the middle of the room, his eyes closed as he tipped his head side-to-side, snapped his fingers. "Sha-ba-sha-ba."

"Hey, Sterling, you want to come back in here and—oh, everybody's up. That's good," Mary Louise

said, tripping into the room and plopping herself down on one of the couches, little bits of cotton stuck between her freshly painted toenails. "Now I don't have to suffer alone. Hit it, Sterling."

Sterling stopped bobbing and weaving, opened his eyes, and immediately flushed a deep red, all the way to his eyebrows.
